Combining the Kentucky Derby with Bourbon Tastings on a River Tour
Whether you’re a Kentucky native or not, you likely know that the bluegrass state is best known for two things: horses and bourbon. They may appear to be two separate industries, but, in fact, they have a shared history and unique relationship that have supported Kentucky’s commerce and tourism to grow and thrive today. At Kentucky River Tours, we’re passionate about Kentucky’s history and the industries that make up our state. Whether you’re a tourist exploring what Kentucky has to offer or a local wanting to learn more about your state’s history, we have a river tour experience for you!

A Shared History
First run in 1875, the Kentucky Derby is the first of three legs of The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, a series of races for thoroughbred race horses. The Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes follow the Kentucky Derby as the second and third legs of the Triple Crown. Each year, tourists, horse enthusiasts, trainers, horse owners, and many others gather in anticipation of the races.
While visiting the area, Kentucky Derby patrons will visit The Kentucky Derby Museum and stops along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®, both offering unique tastings, tours, and even a “Mint Julep University.” While waiting for the derby to begin, you can sip on the famous Mint Julep — the bourbon-based official drink of The Kentucky Derby. Since 1999, a genuine Mint Julep has been served with Woodford Reserve — the official bourbon of the derby.
Celebrate Kentucky History On a River Boat Tour
There’s no better place to celebrate Kentucky than on a riverboat tour on the beautiful Kentucky River. Enjoy signature drinks of The Kentucky Derby, or choose a tour with unique bourbons sourced from across the state. The Old Taylor Tour is a must if you’re a fan of Buffalo Trace bourbon because the tour includes a tour of Buffalo Trace Distillery. The KY River Bourbon History Tour is a favorite for bourbon enthusiasts who want to delve into the origins of bourbon in Kentucky. There’s something for just about everyone on our river tours — laughter, good company, history, and bourbon!
