Best Time to Visit Frankfort & Kentucky River Tours: A Seasonal Guide
Frankfort, Kentucky, is one of those places that rewards visitors in every season — a small capital city with a big personality, a rich bourbon history, and a river that's been at the center of it all for centuries. But if you're planning a trip around a Kentucky River cruise or trying to figure out the best time to experience what we do, this guide will help you think through it season by season.

Here's a guide for deciding when to visit Kentucky River Tours:
Spring (April–May): The Season Begins
Spring is when Kentucky River Tours officially kicks off the season, and there's a reason it's one of our most anticipated times of year. The river comes alive after winter, the hills around Frankfort go green seemingly overnight, and the mild temperatures make being out on the water genuinely comfortable. April and May are ideal for our Bourbon History Tour, where you'll hear about six distilleries connected to the Kentucky River, see the operational Lock and Dam #4, and pass Daniel Boone's burial site from the water.
Spring is also one of the best times to try the River Tour and Taste—a cruise that pairs the history of Frankfort and the Kentucky bourbon industry with three to four pours of bourbon and spirits. As the season begins on April 15, bookings fill quickly, so planning ahead is strongly recommended.
Summer (June–August): Peak Season on the River
Summer is Kentucky River Tours' busiest time, and with good reason. Long days mean more daylight on the water, the Kentucky River is at its most active, and Frankfort has a full slate of events and activities to complement your visit. Our summer schedule runs a full lineup of tours, and the warm weather makes the open-air boat experience especially enjoyable.
Suppose you're visiting with a group, whether a corporate outing, a family reunion, or a celebration, summer is the prime time to book a custom or private tour. We can tailor the experience to your group's interests and size, making it one of the more memorable options for Kentucky River cruises in the area.
Fall (September–October): Scenic and Spectacular
Fall is beloved along the Kentucky River for a reason. The trees along the river turn brilliant shades of gold, red, and orange in October, creating a memorable and photogenic backdrop. Temperatures begin to cool off but remain comfortable on the water, and the bourbon connection becomes even richer—fall is harvest season for distilleries, and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail™ is in full swing.
Fall is also when Kentucky River Tours’ seasonality becomes a consideration. Tours run through October, but as November approaches, we begin winding down for the off-season. If fall is your window, it’s better to book earlier in the season to ensure availability. The combination of the foliage, the bourbon trail, and the river makes September and October our most scenic months on the water.
Winter (November–March): Plan Your Next Adventure
Kentucky River cruises’ seasonality means tours pause from November through March. Winter is Frankfort's quieter time, and while the river has its own austere beauty in the cold months, we're not out on it. That said, the off-season is the perfect time to start planning—popular tour dates in spring and summer book quickly, and securing your spot early means you won't miss out when the season reopens.
Frankfort itself is worth a winter visit for its history, architecture, and the bourbon experience that continues year-round at the distilleries along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail™. When you're ready to plan your river cruise, our team is available to help year-round.
