What Snacks Should I Bring on a Bourbon Boat Tour?

We often get asked what guests should bring aboard, and food is a good start. While some of our cruises include snacks or bourbon samples, many guests love packing their own bites to enjoy during the ride. Here are a few pairings we’ve seen work really well:

Dark chocolate and a smooth wheated bourbon: The sweetness of the chocolate brings out caramel notes and softens the spice.
Kentucky country ham and a high-rye bourbon: Salty and bold meats stand up well to the heat of a rye-heavy pour.
Pecans or walnuts with small-batch bourbon: Nuts offer a subtle contrast to richer bourbon varieties and travel easily.
Soft cheese and single-barrel bourbon: Brie or Camembert paired with a single barrel release? Trust us on this one.

Just remember: We do not allow you to bring your own alcoholic drinks on board. We also prefer that you bring snacks that are easy to transport and clean up.

Or, save yourself the hassle of bringing snacks along and purchase snacks on the boat . You can guarantee that anything we offer will pair well with the drinks served.

We are growing up!

As we try to make your experience with Kentucky River Tours, aka The Bourbon Boat, the best it possibly can be, we are lear n ing things that we feel we can do to make the experience even better. One of the things we hear a lot is that folks try to cram so much in to a Kentucky Bourbon Trail experience, that they do not allow enough time to stop, rest, relax...and EAT! This ain't good!

So we want to help. As of August 13, 2025, we now serve a limited amount of food as a part of your Bourbon Boat tour experience. Our options for now are limited to charcuterie boards, pretzels and beer cheese, nachos and dip and freshly baked cookies, but we do plan to expand this offering as we age and get better, like a fine bourbon! These items will be freshly prepared for you when you arrive, and ready to enjoy by the time we leave the dock on your tour.

These items will be available to add to your experience during your initial "BOOKING" process. There will also be a reminder email and ability to purchase a few days before your trip. We HIGHLY recommend that if you want food to be available for you when you board the boat, you make your selections ahead of time. You can view the offerings we have HERE , and if you have a per-existing reservation, you can add food to it from here. We MAY be able to add food for your experience when you arrive, but options may be limited as we learn this new craft.

Additionally, we will be serving a limited menu for the general public at our dock. So if your wish is to simply come down to the river, enjoy a cocktail or local beer that you purchase while our boat is docked, and have a quick snack or appetizer... we probably have the best view ion Frankfort for to come do that!

The Belle is Back!

We had been delayed but not stopped!

Our season has started off a bit delayed due to the flood of early April 2025. One of those delays was we were unable to get our larger vessel, The Bourbon Belle, back to Frankfort due to damage at the Locks and Dams.

However, this week, we were able to get the Belle back home due to the hard work of the Lock Masters with the Kentucky River Authority. What does this mean for you? This means that all tours will not be conducted on The Belle, unless you arrange a specific tour or private charter on our smaller boat, The Trace of Kentucky.

This means that all tours will have multiple seating options, that there will be a full cash bar on board and that we will run rain or shine due to the enclosed nature of the vessel. We hope we are able to get you on board so you can experience the one of a kind Kentucky Bourbon Trail experience that we offer! An update on"BOATS" as we start the 2025 season!

The "Trace of Kentucky" and "The Bourbon Belle"

As we start into the 2025 season, we are working diligently through all of the historic flooding to get things moving. We have had our own sets of issues, but nothing a small business cannot work through. We have had to delay the beginning of our season for two weeks, meaning all our April tours had to be cancelled. But we are ready to get you on the water on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, and as of May 1, 2025, we will be doing just that!

Most of our tours operate on "The Bourbon Belle", our larger, 48 passenger, double level vessel with a full bourbon bar on board. However, that boat, which spends its winters on the Ohio River, is currently still "STUCK" there. It is in a marina, safe and sound, but due to damage to our Locks and Dams from the recent flooding, we are not able to get it back to Frankfort until work is done. As of now, that work is slated for late May 2025.

For this reason, we will start tours May 1st, however, all tours, until further notice, will be offered on our "Trace of Kentucky". This is our smaller vessel that is also the boat we started our entire business with in 2017. She is a 15 passenger vessel that is fully open to the elements, which provides a wonderful, clear view of all the splendor our river has to offer. The "Trace" has very comfortable seating and, being smaller, has a very intimate experience with other guests and the interpreter/ storytellers on board. This includes the Captain!

Above is what she does have, but we need to be honest in what she does not have that "The Belle" does, so you can plan your trip and decide if you want to have an experience with us or not. She does NOT have a restroom on board. There is a restroom at the dock where you board and de-board for your tour. She also does not have a full bar on board. However, if you book a tour with a bourbon tasting, we have made arrangements for us to still be able to do that.

If you have booked either our "Trace Tour" or our "Old Taylor Tour", we are limited in what parts of the Buffalo Trace Distillery tour will be offered as part of this tour. What is offered there is at their discretion. They too are working hard to clean up after historic flooding, and have had to modify their experiences, too. We ask that you be patient. There will be access to the distillery, in fact we get priority as a pre-booked option, but it may be limited.

The reason for this post is to be honest on the experiences we are offering at this point. We know for a fact that we still offer a wonderful one of a kind experience. You can go to our Trip Advisor page and read numerous reviews, all 5 Stars, that recognize our smaller boat experience. We encourage you to do this prior to your trip, even prior to booking!

Below are some photos of our smaller boat. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call or email us so we can better discuss our options with you. We really hope that you join us for one of the most unique Kentucky Bourbon Trail experiences that exists. As things change and we are able to offer tours in a more "normal" way on our bigger boat, we will be updating as soon as we know.

Frankfort Flood 2025

Frankfort STRONG!

This should come as no surprise that Frankfort experienced some massive and historic flooding in April 2025. We are working through the cleanup in this process, and at this point, still waiting for the water to recede. So be patient with us!

We are safe! That is most important. No one in our company was harmed and stuff is just stuff. Our boats were either safely in marina's on other rivers, like the Ohio... yes it flooded too but the floating parts of the marina were mostly unharmed... or on trailers on high ground. Our mooring in Frankfort is currently 35 feet higher than it is supposed to be, and where it lands when the river comes down and what damage it suffers is up in the air... literally! But, again, what is important is we are all good! Please pray for those who lost life in this flood and those that are more impacted than we are!

However, we have a business to run and I am sure you want to know if we are running tours or not. "We have a tour booked, will it still go?" "Are you taking reservations?" Short answer is, we don't know!

At this point you can still make reservations for any time this year beginning April 14. However, it is all likely that tours will not begin this year until possibly early May... we hope not longer. If you have a tour booked or book a tour, please keep an eye out for any emails regarding the status. We will try and reach out as soon as possible, but it may be a day or two before your experience. You may also check our social media pages for updates. If you want to know sooner for planning purposes, feel free to call us at any time...we try and always answer... 502 / 219 / 3318

All tours that go to Buffalo Trace Distillery are undetermined at this time as well, as their entire property, as seen above, is in the river. How quick do they recover and reopen we do not know. We will be going at their discretion and direction.

If we must cancel your tour, we will offer a 100% refund. You may take a Gift Card if you like so you can already begin planning your next trip, but to your original form of payment is fine as well.

We also have the option that tours may run but may run on a different boat. Our big boat, The Belle, can not get home until the locks and dams are serviceable again. We may be offering smaller passenger count tours on our smaller boat, The Trace. Realize that when planning. If you want to learn more about our boats, check out the ABOUT US page here on our site. If you book for the bigger boat and we can not run it and you do not wish to ride our smaller boat, we can offer you a refund.

Thanks again for being patient with us. We promise we want to get on the river as much as you do! This storm and flood has caused loss of life, property damage, total losses personally and to many businesses , etc....and in its aftermath, it is financially impacting the way we make a living and feed our family. These decisions are not taken lightly and we make them with the utmost care and thought of your safety and experience. Pray for our town and pray for our river. Your thoughts are felt, needed and welcomed!

This passage was literally read to us the first day of the recent storms that caused this flooding, at the start of a class we were teaching in Indianapolis by one of our participants, Don. Don said that this was his devotional reading just that morning and we felt it apropos... big word, huh!

Jesus says that if we have received his fullness, it doesn’t matter how small the visible measure of our lives may be; out of us will flow rivers that will bless the farthest reaches of the earth. A river is victoriously persistent, overcoming all barriers. It goes steadily along in its course, then comes to an obstacle and, for a while, is blocked. But it soon makes a pathway around. Has an obstacle come into your life? Do you see God using others while you seem to be of no use? Keep paying attention to the source, and God will either take you around the obstacle or remove it. We finally did it!

We have been working for the last sixth months to secure our own liquor license on board The Bourbon Belle, and we have finally done it! We now have a cocktail bar on board our boat that serves three of four river themed cocktails, locally produced beers, straight pours of Buffalo Trace or Sazerac Rye, and non alcoholic drinks like root beer, ginger ale and ginger beer, along with water.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18) — If you've been on a distillery tour, you learn plenty about what it takes to make bourbon.

You also learn quite a bit about the distillery itself. What if these tours somehow managed to bring you on the water?
"We go somewhere new every year," said one visitor from Michigan. "We usually take boat tours."

For a couple of hours, you'll learn about Kentucky's history.

"You know you can trace all that history of our country and where we've been, back to Kentucky," said Nathan Depenbrock, captain of the Bourbon Boat.

States have things they're known for, such as BBQ in Texas, seafood in Maine, and of course, bourbon in Kentucky.

"One of the major reasons is my wife and I both are bourbon fans," said a visitor from Texas.

The experience goes beyond the distillery or the bourbon itself. It includes the history of the river and for two hours, you can even make a new friend.

"We think back to the day we got around by rivers," Depenbrock said. "A lot of things were made because of our rivers and it's just neat to be able to get out on them and teach people about this wonderful history we have here."

Bourbon on the River - Senate Bill 62

We are proud to be a part of the legislative process!

At Kentucky River Tours we do love teaching people about the history of Kentucky the Kentucky River, and both of their connections to bourbon. However, unless we bring a local business on board to offer their bourbon, we have not been allowed to pour our own. And we have done that for the last few years, partnering with a great local bourbon hotspot called "Bourbon on Main".

Why have we not been allowed? Why couldn't we just get our own alcohol license? Kentucky law has a line in it that allows for a "riverboat" to have its own license, but Kentucky defines a riverboat as hauling 100 passengers for hire or more. We run a 49 passenger boat!

Knowing we had this conundrum, we approached our partners at the Kentucky Distillers Association, facilitators of "The Kentucky Bourbon Trail", to see what we could do. They connected us with their lobbyist and he recommended us reaching out to congressional delegates for a path forward.

We contacted our local Senator, Gex Williams, during the summer of 2023, and proposed to him the idea of dropping that 100 passenger number down to 40. Gex was all on board, as he sees the value in bourbon tourism, and he is also a huge advocate for using our Kentucky River and appreciates the history of it.

From these early and innocent conversations, Senate Bill 62 was born. This bill simply changes that one word in the Kentucky Statutes from 100 passengers to 40 passengers. This allows for smaller vessels to still be able to navigate the smaller locks of the Kentucky River, but these smaller boats will not be punished for their size by withholding rights to things like alcohol licenses.

On Thursday, January 18, 2024, SB62 officially passed the Kentucky State Senate with a unanimous 35-0 vote. The bill is now off to the House side of Kentucky government to hopefully obtain passage there, and if and when, to the governors desk for signing.

To sum up the enormity of what SB62 will do for Kentucky, the Kentucky River and Kentucky River Tours, it is best to quote Senate Majority Floor Leader, Senator Damon Thayer of Scott, Grant, Fayette and Kenton, during the First Reading of the bill at the Senate Standing Committee of Licensing and Occupations:

We take sports fairly seriously in Kentucky. Yes, we have always been known for our basketball prowess, being the most successful winning-est program in NCAA Div. 1 history with a win percentage of .725% and having the second most NCAA tournament championships with 8.

But all the sudden we have become a football state! Winning the Music City Bowl in 2022, and at one time last season being ranked #7 in the nation. The Cats did not finish with the record they hoped for, but we still cheered them on all the way through the season.

Being around Central Kentucky during football season is something to behold. We go all out in support of "the game". So regardless of who you are here to cheer for, we got your back and will put on our best show for you!

Are you coming for the races?

If you have never been to the horse races, its easy to be distracted and think, "I need to go to the Kentucky Derby". But you don't! Yes the Derby is awesome; they don't call it the "fastest two minutes in sports for no reason". But, in our opinion, going to the races at Kenneland in Lexington is every bit as fun, entertaining and great for a Kentucky experience.

Keeneland gives you a look at what horse racing was meant to be. Women still wear hats, men dress up a little nicer and classic cocktails like Mint Juleps will surround you. What it does not have is quite the same crowd. Now you won't have it to yourself, but you will also not be surrounded by 155,000 of your best friends.

The fall meet at Keeneland last three weeks, and tickets sell out fast... the facility usually has around 17,000 attendees each day, but bigger days can see up to 30,000. Tickets are on sale now, and our recommended entries are General Admission, ranging from $7.00 to $15.00 per person, and Reserved Grandstand, ranging from $15.00 to $30.00

Did you know that Kentucky produces about 95% of the world's bourbon supply, our production of bourbon has increased 475% since 1999 and there are over 95 distilleries in the state which supply the 9 billion dollar bourbon industry!

Where to start if planning a bourbon trail trip? We highly recommend checking out the Kentucky Distillers Associations' " Kentucky Bourbon Trail " page. This will be a great planning resource to get your started. But, do realize that not all distilleries on on the official "Kentucky Bourbon Trail", so do your homework.

We are particularly fond of basing your bourbon experience out of Frankfort. There is a lot of good reasons to back up that thought, but mostly the fact that we are within minutes of Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, Castle and Key, Wild Turkey, Four Roses, Glenn's Creek, Whiskey Thief and others. And that's not including nearby Lexington, Shelbyville, Bardstown and Louisville. That's just the distilleries; not to mention all the restaurants, cocktail bars and more!

Bourbon and Boats...and a few good friends!

Our "Bourbon and Boats" is a special tour that allows you to learn about bourbon history and taste it all at the same time! We recently enjoyed one of these tours with old friends and new aboard "The Bourbon Belle"!

The Carr Family from Lebanon, Missouri are long time friends of Captain's Allison and Nathan. We traveled numerous places with them and been by each others side during some milestone moments.

Jared Carr also happens to be the Mayor of Lebanon, Missouri, the home of Independent Stave who makes a large portion of the barrels used by the bourbon industry.

So when they came to town a few weeks ago for their fathers birthday, we wanted to wow them with an awesome look into bourbon history; so we arranged a "Bourbon and Boats" tour for them. This is our Flagship tour that partners with local bourbon hotspot, "Bourbon on Main".

Bourbon County! What!?!

Kentucky was originally a part of Fincastle County Virginia before statehood in 1792. And when originally divided up but Virginia's legislature, it was made up of just three counties... we have 120 counties today! These three original counties were named for Thomas Jefferson , governor of Virginia at the time, Marquis de La Fayette , French General who assisted in the American Revolutionary War, and Revolutionary War general, Benjamin Lincoln , grandfather of Abraham.

Once they started dividing the Kentucky county up, the did so honoring more of these war hero's. So in 1785 they divided off the first county; Bourbon County. It was named for King Louis XVI's contributions to the Revolutionary War.

The King was a member of the House of Bourbon, pronounced with a bit of growl in your throat! The Bourbon Dynasty ruled France from 1272 until 1792, when it was overthrown in the French Revolution. Power was restored briefly in 1814, and again in 1815, with the fall of the first French Empire. They ruled entirely from then until 1830 when overthrown in the July 1830 Revolution. A small faction of the House called the House of Orle'ans ruled from 1830 until 1848, when the House fell for good.

Bourbon County Virginia, later Kentucky, was further divided into what is today 34 of Kentucky's counties. It was a massive county that comprised a good portion of the north eastern portion of our state. The larger area became known as "Old Bourbon". Today, bourbon county is centered and seated by the town of Paris, Kentucky... aw, obviously a lot of French influence there!

So Bourbon County! What does that have to do with Bourbon Whiskey... well, everything! But we will cover that one later!

How To Build A Fine Bourbon Collection In Just Four Days! This Is An INSIDER SECRET!

Frankfort has quickly become the center of the bourbon world. With multiple distilleries in town and county, you cannot go wrong basing your experience out of Frankfort. The Bourbon World is way more than just distilleries; its great food, awesome cocktail bars and great bourbon guides! And we have it all. But how can you make the most out of your experience in our town? READ ON for insider secrets on playing the Buffalo Trace game and getting yourself a fine bourbon collection started in just four days!

What is "The Buffalo Trace" game? Buffalo Trace distillery typically (but not guaranteed) puts Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Sazerac Rye and one of four different premium bourbons on the shelf every day. The four premiums are Blanton's Original, EH Taylor Small Batch, Weller Special Reserve and Eagle Rare. These premiums will all be shelf price, so around $69.00 for Blanton's, and around $39.00 for the other three. You are allowed one bottle a day of BT and Saz per day, but the premium bourbon is allowed at only one bottle per person per 90 days. This 90 days is referred to locally as "bourbon timeout".

You can CLICK HERE to start researching how the rotation works. This page is updated usually around 8:30 AM every day, and it will show you which bourbons are on the shelf that day.

So the "game" is plan on staying within 30 minutes of Frankfort for three nights. That way, each day you can go to the distillery and get BT, Saz, and one of the four premiums. Plan on arriving before the doors open, which is 9:00 AM during the week and 11:00 AM on Sunday. Most serious "game players" arrive at least one hour early. And, plan on each of you in your party buying while there... why not, its bourbon !

After four days, you will have four BT's, four Saz, and one of each premium. Take all that home and you got yourself one fine bourbon collection! But beware... " bourbon collection " is a BAD word! We don't collect bourbon... we drink bourbon! The best story on WHY WE DON'T is below.. . please watch, you won't be disappointed!

Got the plan? Good, but don't tell anyone; might overwhelm the system! Now get on the horn (that's old man talk for what today would be the internet) and start planning.

Why a Bourbon Boat tour this summer? Well, first, we are a "one of a kind experience"...literally! You will not find another whiskey distillery/ history tour in the world.

Second, we are very proud of what we do, and we are very good at it. We believe in teaching the unadulterated truth about bourbon. This includes how bourbon's history affects Kentucky history, a how Kentucky history affects bourbon history. We talk about multiple distilleries along the way, like Castle and Key, Woodford Reserve, Glenn's Creek, and Wild Turkey Distilleries, and even have partnerships with some of the bigger players in the game, like Buffalo Trace Distillery.

Third, our tours are relaxing way to take some time while on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail to simply slow down and enjoy what beauty we have here in Kentucky. HUGE NEWS! "The Bourbon Belle!"

"The Bourbon Belle" is now the second boat in the Kentucky River Tours fleet! We are so proud and excited to begin offering tours in the spring of 2023 on board this new boat. She will be coming to Frankfort in May of 2023 once we complete some maintenance along with a new wrap.

Not only does "The Belle" allow us to serve bourbon on board since she has a fully enclosed cabin, but she has a full heating and air system, an open upper deck and enclosed lower deck and an area we can allow catering on board for custom charters.

Buffalo Trace is building

Buffalo Trace is building.

A press release provided by the distillery said that the company has already built 10 new warehouses as part of a $1.2 billion expansion initially announced in 2018.

The release said that Buffalo Trace will continue to build a new warehouse every four months until further notice. The new warehouses are seven stories tall and can house 58,800 barrels each.

The company recently received approval for a state incentive of $840,000 from the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) as part of its Kentucky Enterprise Initiative Act program. The funds went toward construction materials and building fixtures to aid a $155 million chunk of the company’s planned expansion.

Buffalo Trace’s parent company, Sazerac, also received $300,000 in state funds committed toward the construction of a boiler house to expand its operations in Bardstown.

The Frankfort expansion is taking place on a 292-acre farm just north of the company’s historic facility, which was purchased by Sazerac for $3.25 million in 2014.

Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley said that he is proud of the taste consistency that the company has achieved at its new warehouse locations compared to its older ones. The company charted out temperature fluctuations at a new warehouse versus an old one and found very little discrepancy.

“Through the years, we’ve gathered millions of data points on how the environment affects the whiskey inside the barrel,” Wheatley said. “We know, for example, how important heating the warehouses is during the winter months, which is why we committed to continuing that tradition in our new warehouses we’re building. All of these data points give us great confidence that the bourbon we’re putting up today in our new warehouses will have the consistent flavor profiles our fans have come to expect.”

"THIRSTY THURSDAY" took us today to the Bardstown Bourbon Company . This Distillery may be a relative newcomer to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, opening in 2016, but they have some awesome distinctions on the trail.

First, they distill for 20 different brands, and their own. And second, they have a 'Napa Valley" style facility, gorgeous to look at, and even more, like a great restaurant and even better bar. The most well stocked bourbon bar we have seen.

We HIGHLY RECOMMEND a stop here while on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, and be sure and be like uour Captains, finish your tour with an Old Fashioned and a Slip and Slide!

There's a Bob on Board

We love sharing the river with all sorts of people, and there are no better people to share it with than those celebrating special days. We have had anniversaries, honeymoons, birthdays, graduations, engagements, and more on board. But I don't know if there could have been a better day than on Bob's birthday!

Bob lives here in Frankfort at the Stewart Home School . turning 687 years young, Bob's care taker Jim thought there could be no better way to celebrate than a beautiful day on the river... and it was... AT FIRST!

We cruised as a private charter all the way up to the terminus of Glenn's Creek, about 1 mile up from the I-65 Bridges. There we cut the motors and had some wonderful birthday cake from B's Bakery in Frankfort.

When we started heading back, the sky's changed. Then wind, then rain, then harder rain!

Everyone loved it! Bob was a trooper.... and Jim lightened the mood by saying all boat trips have to have some rain.

We had a great cruise in the rain back to the dock, and when we pulled away after dropping Bob and his guests off at the park dock, we headed up river to turn back and see this wonderful rainbow, basically ending where Bob and his guests were loading up to head home. To say God was shining down on Bob that day was an understatement in our eyes!

Fishin' the Kentucky

Canoe Kentucky joined us today on the "Trace". It was part of their "Fishing Camp" that they offer through their summer camp series. Now fishing is not normally something we do on board, but they were all so darn cute; how could we resist!

We took the kids, along with Fishing Camp counselors Chad and Grace, down through Lock and Dam 4 so they could fish the tail waters of the dam. Within about 10 minutes we had one nice Channel Catfish on the line. Thinking the fishing was going to get good from there, we were sadly mistaken. 2 others caught Channels Cats, but other than that, we had a lot of kids baiting hooks and snagging the bottom.

But, there is always "just one more cast", and that is when one of our kids got hooked in to something nice! the fight was on, and our little man was not giving in. 5 minutes later, and three jumps out of the water, we had landed a real nice 25"+ Longnose Gar. Not anything you want to eat, but ask this young man if he enjoyed the fight!

Take a kid fishing! What a great experience and way to get some wonderful people in to the outdoors. It is needed now more than ever, with screens and thumbs moving a rapid paces. Check out Canoe Kentucky if you want to make it happen on either the Elkhorn Creek or the Kentucky River.

Eagles on the River!

An awesome "Bourbon Pompeii" tour today with Kim, Frances and Tracy, their families and loved ones.

Tom at the lock chamber did a great job getting us safely though, and as we passed Buffalo Trace Distillery, the sky could not have been any more blue.

The water was just perfect, and as we rounded the bend known as the Jolly Roger Bend, Captain Allison and myself knew we were in for some surprises that day, as we spooked 5 Great Blue Herons, 2 Egrets and 3 Cormorants. The last two are not even supposed to be here in Kentucky, but the pass through for safety during hurricane season... Laura had just come ashore in Florida that day!

As we passed out some Ale - 8's and Rebecca Ruth bourbon balls, I could not even get back to the helm before Captain Allison leaped. "Bald Eagle," she shouted! He was perched up in the tree on river right, and not far downstream was his mate. What a site, considering in my lifetime the eagle was so rare they had an accurate count of how many were left in the wild in the U.S.

We watched them for about 2 minutes, and as they got tired of us, they flew off down river, I am sure in hopes of finding a fresh fish meal.

It is not often that we see eagles on the river, but we are beginning to see them more. there is currently two nests on the Elkhorn Creek, one that was used last year and hatched two babies. It is located just above the Forks of Elkhorn, technically on the north Fork. The other is currently being built just above the Pfieffer Fish Hatchery. We sincerely hope this pair was in Pool 3 that day scouting out new property for them to build another nest!

Thanks to the families that joined us on the river that magical day. Not sure if it can be replicated, but we are going to try our hardest. Our "Bourbon Pompeii" and "Lock and Dam" Tours are both the ones you want to get on if you want to see wildlife, as Pool 3 has much more since it is less used than Pool 4. these are available every week throughout the summer months.

This long-awaited release also introduces a new look for Castle & Key spirits, featuring a bespoke glass bottle and artistic labels designed to honor the history of our property, those who helped restore the property to its former glory, and the imaginative team that crafted our spirits. What was once known as Restoration Release Gin and Vodka will now be Roots of Ruin Gin and Sacred Spring Vodka.

The newly designed portfolio of spirits will officially be available at the distillery on Friday, December 4th. Reservations are required to visit Castle & Key Distillery. Don't Expect Us To Cry For 2020!

Touring season is over!

Should we be sad ... yep! We love sharing the river, the place we love, with people from all over the US, and the world for that matter!

Are we sad... nope! 2020 is a year we will be happy to be done with, put in the books, and move on to 2021.

We must clarify, and frankly, count our blessings. 2020 threw many, many businesses curveballs. COVID 19 restrictions were tough, and here in Kentucky was no exception. We were not able to open up for tours until June 15th, two and a half months beyond are scheduled start date. Then, our most popular tour, which was fully booked for months on end, had to be cancelled. That being our Bourbon Pompeii ,because Buffalo Trace Distillery did not open in a capacity that we could partner with them until September.

Once we were floating things were still tough. Extra sanitizing measures... if you toured with us this year you can hopefully attest to how clean the "Trace" was this season. Social distancing meant no shuttling from the distillery. All tours met at the dock... which in all honesty, we really liked. (Captain Allison and myself were not split up as much so we got to tour a whole bunch together.) Limited capacities of 8 people, except private single groups. And many more things.

BUT, there is always a silver lining. Our customers were, in short, AWESOME ! No doubt we met some of the best people in the world this season. People like Darcy and her husband, who lost everything in the Paradise, California fires and came to the Bourbon Trail before starting there new life living on a boat on the "Great Loop". And Brianna and her new husband, who were celebrating their honeymoon on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, after having a COVID-19 wedding! And Bob from the Stewart Home School, who celebrated his 68th birthday aboard the "Trace". And Einer , who also celebrated her birthday on board the "Trace", but for many of her friends, the first time they left the safety of their homes during a pandemic. And many, many more.

So we always look forward! We look forward to 2021 being the best year yet for Kentucky River Tours, for the "Bourbon Boat", for The Kentucky Bourbon Trail, for all our health's and well being, and for the sanity and love of all people. May we all go into this winter counting our blessing... that we are able to even read this blog...and preparing for much better days and times to come!

We're BACK, Baby!

YES... we are excited! After a LONG, LONG extended winter break... anyone know why!... we are back in the water and ready to get YOU out on it!

Tours officially begin June 14th. We will be offering a few new things this year, as well as all the standard popular tours from 2019. There are a few new guidelines and things going on that you may want to be aware of before you come out:

We will NOT be offering our NEW Bourbon Pompeii Tour until at least September, do to Buffalo Trace restrictions
We will be meeting at Riverview Park, located at around 700 Wilkinson Blvd (the boat dock side, NOT the Farmers Market side, which is where GPS will take you if you enter "Riverview Park") until further notice. You confirmation email will tell you where to plan to meet, so ensure you read that upon reservation!
We will be limited to 8 guests on board until further notice... a family that lives under the same roof can have more than 8.
The "Trace" is being thoroughly cleaned once a day and sanitized in between each and every tour
Our Sunset Cruise is a great way to get the best views in Frankfort... and its offered twice a week, Friday's at 7:00 and Saturdays at 8:00. Great for families, or that romantic date night!
We will offer beverages on board all our tours except our Historic Frankfort Tour, but we will NOT be able to offer any snacks or treats as we have in the past... until further notice!

Days on the water again are getting closer! There is some light at the end of the tunnel. Here in KY we have started to see some restrictions being lifted and more will come soon! We hope to be part of that "soon"!

As of the time of this post, so subject to change, we are aiming to be back on the water by May 15, 2020. Fingers crossed! When we do get back to NORMAL, we all know it will be a NEW NORMAL. We like to think that we are making adaptations to normal operations, not resrictions...sounds much more "back to earth"! Some of those adaptations...not all...are:

Masks will be worn by all Captains and crew as well as van drivers
All Captains and crew will undergo daily temperature checks
Boat capacity will be limited down from our normal 15 passengers. We have not made a final decision yet on total, but it will be less
All touched surfaces will be disinfected after each tour
All tours will meet at the boat dock inside Riverview Park, not Buffalo Trace, until further notice
Social distancing will be observed on board and guests are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to bring and wear their own mask
We will be offering more tour options this year since group size will be limited
All tours will be reservation only...no walk up reservations

We are fluid, like the river itself... so things will change!
All tours are currently on HOLD until we receive further notice that we can legally operate.
We encourage folks to not CANCEL their trip with us if it is currently scheduled, but instead WAIT to see what changes come.
